At Five in the Afternoon (Persian: Panj é asr) is a 2003 film by Iranian writer-director Samira Makhmalbaf. It tells the story of an ambitious young woman trying to gain an education in Afghanistan after the defeat of the Taliban. The title comes from a Federico García Lorca poem and is a tale of flourishing against the odds. At Five in the Afternoon was the first film to be shot in Kabul after the NATO invasion. It was an international co-production between the Iranian company Makhmalbaf Productions and the French companies Bac Films and Wild Bunch. The film premiered at Cannes in 2003 and was awarded the Jury Prize and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.

2003 film directed by Samira Makhmalbaf. After the Taliban’s fall, schools are re-opening for girls and a young girl in Afghanistan wants to become President of the Republic. This young girl who has recently regained her voice, yet is still afraid to use her new found freedom, is our hero. She daydreams of becoming president of war torn Afghanistan, the only vision of power that she can imagine that could truly change her current situation. We catch a glimpse of her spirit while witnessing her hardships. In the end, we are left with hope, hope that when her young voice does eventually speak out, it speaks loud and clear for all to hear – sounding a message that transcends borders, nationality and religion.

Après la chute des Talibans en Afghanistan, les écoles ouvrent à nouveau pour les filles. Trois personnages sont au centre de ce film, dont le titre est emprunté à un poème de Garcia Lorca : un vieil homme, symbole de l’Islam intégriste, sa belle-fille, mère d’un bébé mourant et sa fille Noghreh, jeune étudiante qui rêve d’émancipation au point de vouloir devenir Présidente de la République.
